Rhode Island journalists from our member publications completed strong coverage from all angles of the mass shooting at Brown University, the investigation, and eventual conclusion with the self-inflicted death of the main suspect.
Editor Lylah Alphonse, who leads reporting efforts at The Globe Rhode Island, had the following to say about her team.
"They have been amazing on the ground, and when most of the metro team dropped everything and joined the effort, we were so grateful. Last night, my Boston Globe New Hampshire team stepped forward to help as well. Being a journalist right now can be relentless and thankless, but I'm deeply grateful to work with and lead the teams I do, and it has been incredible to see the entire Boston Globe newsroom come together to be the eyes and ears of the public as this horrific news event unfolded. And somehow the newsroom did it all while continuing to cover so many other important regional and local stories! Amazing."
The Journal has reporting on Mayor Brett Smiley urging the FBI to give the $50,000 reward to the man who identified the shooter in the case.
The following are some of the pieces written during the investigation:
Here is one from The Globe on shortcomings with notifications in the area of the university, and here is one from The Journal on impacts to businesses just before Christmas.
The Providence Eye has a piece on the shortcomings of Brown's communications system.
Check out this editorial from RI Monthly.
The Cranston Herald has a story on what Brown students were experiencing on the day of the shooting.

This week provides another reminder that journalists aren't supposed to follow the official narratives, but should be digging deeper to find the real story.
